Choosing door handles

When selecting door handles for your building, there is so much to consider that it can be difficult to know where to start. Let our guide help you.

Does it matter which way door handles go?

Yes, it’s important to make sure door handles are pointing in the correct direction. To identify which way the handle goes, simply stand on the side of the door where the door closes towards you. If the door hinge is to the right, you require a right-handed handle. If the door hinge is to the left, you will need a left-handed handle.

What is the difference between handles and knobs?

The main difference between a door handle and a door knob is that a door knob has a circular head to operate the opening and closing mechanism, whereas a door handle is a lever that can be gripped.

Do fire doors need special handles?

Yes. Fire doors act as an essential barrier against flames and smoke and all the hardware fitted on a fire doorset, including any handles, should be fire-rated. To meet the necessary standards, a fire doorset must pass one or a series of standardised tests, as well as being correctly certified and rated to withstand fire for a set period of time. This testing should be conducted by an accredited independent testing body, in accordance with the relevant British or European standards.

Our range of fire door handles accompany fire doors to ensure that you have the utmost protection in the event of a fire.

How long do door handles last?

It’s important to choose a door handle that has a warranty as this offers a guarantee of the lifespan of the product. Our handles come with a 5-year warranty, ensuring good quality as well as durability.

What is the best way to clean brass door handles?

You should never use anything abrasive to clean a brass door handle. For brand new hardware, simply polish with a cotton or microfibre cloth. If you have a handle with stubborn dirt, use a designated brass cleaner.

Are all door handles the same size?

No, door handles come in a range of different sizes. To determine the right size for your door you will need to take a few measurements to ensure your handles fit perfectly. These include measuring the door thickness, door height, stile width (from the edge of the door to the edge of any moulding, panelling or glazing on the door) and the backset width (from the edge of the door to the centre of the door knob or handle).

Selecting a door handle

·         When selecting a door handle, you need to consider the following:

·         What type of handle you need

·         What type of lock case is it being fitted with

·         What the application is

·         Whether it’s being fitted on a fire door

What’s best – door levers, knobs or pull handle?

The door lever or pull handle you choose depends on the use of each door in the building, as well as the style you prefer. Some people prefer door knobs, while others like door levers and pull handles for ease of use and accessibility.
